The Golden Hour in Black & White

Spent the afternoon on the East Coast today and was ecstatic when the beautiful golden light of the afternoon washed the hills and shores of St.John.  A familiar sight for me, I took the opportunity to try rendering the scene, resplendent in the golden light, using black and white.  Blues, greens and browns are surprisingly vibrant.

Speightstown Mash-Up

Apart from the first three images (in bright red), which were taken last week, the majority here are from my hour in Speightstown this afternoon while I was waiting for my Mum.  As is the usual for me this is a photographic cornucopia and really represents my effort to be always looking (and sometimes seeing), where-ever I may be.  This is consistent with the "visual diary" which is the stated objective of this blog.  What I have learned (or re-learned) today is that the right light makes the best photographs. Witness the first three images taken last Friday in brilliant afternoon light.  The overcast conditions this afternoon meant that I was using my more linear, spatial and texture-oriented filters as opposed to the "search" for light in its most playful, expressive and thus fortuitous circumstances.  Perhaps though, the more amateur aspects of these shots still have something to recommend them.  And my "discovery" of the Orange Street Grocer (the glass jars in the windows) which featured a very nice contemporary decor and great coffee means a return to Speightstown soon.
